It’s happened to everyone: you need to input your license plate number for something, and you’re away from your car. Or you’re trying to find your car’s VIN, but you wrote it in your notes app in 2023 and it’s now piled beneath hundreds of other random, unlabeled numbers and notes. Or what about those classic mistakes, like getting pulled over for an expired registration because you forgot to check when it was due for renewal? Or better yet, having to pull off on the side of the road and frantically open Google because you don’t know what the warning light that just popped up on your dashboard means?
These can all be mistakes of the past with just one feature inside the all-in-one Get Adulting app: “My Garage"!! Utilizing this special tool can keep both your car and your sanity intact! Read on for a step-by-step walkthrough of everything this part of the app has to offer.

Who doesn’t love naming their car? Whether you’re going with “Toyota Prius,” something a little more personal like “Kevin,” or even choosing a particularly unique name like “The Batmobile,” the first part of the My Garage section gives you the chance to personalize your car’s moniker! The best part? Numbers, symbols, and even emojis are all on the table! And yes—you can name and input info for up to four cars, not just your main ride.
Underneath your car’s name, you’ll find a section dedicated to keeping track of your car’s info. Think of it as an All-About-Me for your vehicle! Here, you can write down your car’s VIN (which you’ll need for mechanics, insurance companies, and law enforcement); license plate and driver’s license numbers (which you need for—well, everything); and insurance policy (which you’ll need for auto dealers and law enforcement). Underneath that, you can keep track of when your registration expires and when your last emissions test was, with a handy “Enable Reminder” toggle to help you keep on top of both!

Next comes maintenance. This very important section is split into five parts: Oil Change; Tires & Rotation; Air Filter; Brake Inspection; and Battery Check. Each of these parts tells you how often it’s recommended to check these critical components of car care, with the option of inputting the last maintenance date and how things were looking last (for example, the mileage at your last tire rotation). You can also keep track of extra details, such as the type of oil or tire brand you last used, and write anything you missed in “Additional Notes”! Lastly, each section has basic info on how to accomplish its corresponding task, so you can feel in control knowing how to check your oil level, tire pressure, and more. As an added bonus, the “Tires & Rotation” section even tells you how to change a tire, so you won’t have to call your dad at 2 a.m. begging for roadside assistance (don’t worry, we’ve all been there).
Oh, and don’t forget! If your glovebox is a disaster like mine, and you can never find the papers you need for your car—most recently, I took my car to the shop and threw the receipt listing all the details in the back of my car, where I promptly lost it... wish I’d snapped a pic of that one—you can find a place to put pictures and files of your car’s documents right under “Battery Check.” Convenient, right?
Up next comes my favorite component of My Garage. Called “Got A Light?”, this section details what different warning lights on your dashboard mean, as well as whether it’s safe to drive when they’re on and what to do about each issue. I’m particularly fond of this tool because of how it’s helped me! Not being too familiar with cars, I was able to use the corresponding symbols to figure out that I needed to put air in my tires before a long trip home from college. They needed filled pretty badly, and because I remembered I’d just bought Get Adulting and should probably check what the warning light that’d been flashing in my car for weeks was, I was good to go before even starting the trip! More than just keeping me safe, filling my tires before a three-hour drive also helped with my car’s fuel efficiency, helping to reduce carbon emissions while driving and saving me gas money.

Below this comes another incredibly useful resource: a key for different roadside emergencies. In a car accident? Tire just popped? Windshield suddenly cracked? Stay calm, pull over, and pull up the Get Adulting app if you’re not sure what to do. Each of these scenarios includes quite a bit of helpful information related to the problem and what to do about it, and there’s even a roadside emergency accident guide and checklist so you’re never left lost in a bad situation. Find out what to do if your car is smoking, making strange noises, running out of gas, and more, and even call 911 right from the app if needed.
Working in tandem with roadside car issues, a link to a reputed car care website serves as the next feature. Access more than 60,000 do-it-yourself car repair videos that are specific to your car, and easily find the website right from the Get Adulting app under “How-to Videos”!
Feel a little smarter yet? I know I did when I first dove into this section of the app. The last two features of My Garage are pretty necessary as well, and I remember feeling so relieved when I first read through them just to have these resources compiled for me all in one place! In “Quick Tips,” you’ll find even more hints for both driving and car maintenance (in addition to the tips scattered throughout each of the previous sections, of course). One thing I was grateful to learn in this section was to try to keep at least a quarter tank of gas in my car so debris doesn’t clog the fuel filter if I’m running on empty. Who knew?

“Common Car Topics” brings up the rear of My Garage with a multitude of Q&A’s and how-to’s. Ever asked yourself how long until you run out of gas? What about what type of gas you should use, or what the heck that weird smell is? You’ll find the answer pretty quickly by diving into this final section. I’ve found answers to several questions I had just by reading through each topic in my downtime!
Car care isn’t easy, especially for new drivers and people who weren’t taught much about cars. Unfortunately, if you have a car, maintaining it isn’t optional. Anyone with a vehicle should know how to safely pump gas, how to handle emergency situations, and how and when to take care of routine maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, and more. With the Get Adulting app, this critical information will always be up-to-date, easy to access, and collected in one place for all of your vehicular needs. Car maintenance may not be easy, but it doesn’t have to be complicated, either! Stay safe out there, and happy driving! The Get Adulting app is available for just $2.99/year with no Ai, no ads, and no tracking. Your data should stay yours. iOS link: apps.apple.com/us/app/get-adulting/id6744375132
