Happy Birthday, Get Adulting!!! Reflecting on 1 Year of the Get Adulting App

Today, Breanna Stone’s Get Adulting app is a one-stop shop for everyday life (according to user Bdk0208); the most comprehensive app for everything ‘grown-up’ (user Narcoléptica); and, according to user Kaliyah S, the best app ever (we totally agree)! Get Adulting was created to help its users manage their lives better and get their feet under them as seamlessly as possible when, like it does for many of us, the world of adulting comes crashing down upon us with a surprising and relentless amount of force. Now, after a year of Get Adulting being available for download, we’re thrilled and grateful to admit that for many people, it’s done just that.

Over this past year, Get Adulting has seen so much growth, so many changes and updates (many inspired by you guys!), and so many wonderful reviews. We’ve gotten invaluable feedback from people from all across the internet, and all across the world—users around the globe have chimed in across Instagram, TikTok, email, and more to let us know what they think, how they feel and what they want to see added. (Thanks to user feedback, the app has gained the My Family section; calendar syncing; editable cycles and symptom tracking in Women’s Health; the ability to add multiple cars in My Garage; family member prescriptions; dark mode; and even international support so the app works with the currency and measurement systems of users outside of the US!) We’ve also received incredible reviews of the app from people from all different walks of life—young people and first-time college students, yes, but also parents, business owners, neurodivergent adults, graduate students, and many more. As user Cassandra1116 put it, “No matter what stage of adulting you’re in—this [app] is for you!” 

The app has also been in the spotlight on numerous occasions in many unexpected and amazing ways! From being reviewed by @Kristactics on TikTok to being the subject of a podcast episode in The Queer Economy, Get Adulting has been scrutinized, applauded, and appreciated several times over. Discussions about the app can be found in digital magazines like VoyagePhoenix and Medium, positive reviews have been written by neurodivergent-focused groups like NAMI Valley of the Sun and Different Brains, and the app even traveled all the way to Pittsburgh to be showcased in the College Autism Summit back in November! It’s even made its way to interested administrators at West Virginia University, who sat down with me just last week to discuss bringing the app to students with reduced education partnership pricing!

Amidst all of this, though, we’ve kept in mind that the bottom line of Get Adulting isn’t ever to self-aggrandize, bask in praise or even turn a profit. The main goal of the app has always been to help others and support communities, which is why, while all this publicizing and feature-adding has been happening, a whole lot more has been happening behind the scenes that supports Get Adulting’s true mission of giving back. 

One huge example of this is the Get Adulting Foundation, which launched in January and was created to help individuals in need. The Foundation takes revenue directly from Get Adulting and splits it into four categories: a diagnosis fund, an emergency fund, a scholarship fund and a women’s developer fund. These funds range from $500 to $2,000 and will reward neurodivergent adults anywhere in the world (whether or not they use Get Adulting!) with the money set aside for that fund. While the Foundation doesn't open officially until next year, revenue from Get Adulting has been going to different GoFundMe pages for as long as it’s been generating revenue—nearly $2,000 of app-generated funds have gone to different campaigns. As a reminder, Get Adulting stands with immigrants and immigrant families and stands behind people of color, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ community. Last but not least, the most recent development utilizing Get Adulting funds is—drumroll please—community pantries! One has already been built by Breanna herself and it sparked the idea of creating 'kits' which would feature all sorts of pantry staples, as well baby products, and kid’s toys. Aiming to launch later in the year, everything needed for the pantry (both supplies and the storage locker that houses them) will be purchased and shipped for free to users who request one. The only thing recipients will need to do is build it and manage its placement! Communities can then come together taking and refilling items from the pantry, utilizing and replenishing it as needed.

Get Adulting may seem like just an app, but the truth is, it’s become so much more than that since it was first launched a year ago. It may have started as nothing more than a string of code and a dream, but now, it’s clear that the impact of Get Adulting is far-reaching and very, very real. From the very first download to more than 50,000 today and the first Apple review to the 138^th, the app has changed lives. Whether from direct usage of the app or indirectly from its funds, Get Adulting has genuinely impacted people from all around the world. As a dedicated user myself, I can confidently say that Breanna has created something necessary and invaluable—and I know that she’s grateful for the opportunities the app has given her, too.
